“Red Carpet,” Hofesh Shechter’s captivating and groovy creation at the Opéra Garnier
Immediate launch of Hofesh Shechter's new show, Tuesday, June 10, at the Palais Garnier in Paris. For this creation entitled Red Carpet , the Israeli choreographer, based in London since 2002 and co-director of the Agora-Cité internationale de la danse in Montpellier, pulls out all the stops by wrapping his nervous style in a flight of crimson curtains. If the carpet remains rolled up in a corner of the artist's mind and does not appear on stage, it is present in the sumptuous textile ballet that ventilates the appearances of the thirteen dancers and four musicians nestled in all-red, all-velvet frames.
This environment, which is reminiscent of the show Appartement , conceived in 2000 by the Swede Mats Ek , and punctuated by replicas of the gold and red curtain at the front of the stage at Garnier, magnificently occupies the space. It stamps the flamboyant visual appeal of this luxurious production (Chanel for the costumes), specially designed for the ballet of the Paris Opera by the choreographer. The enormous chandelier that descends during Red Carpet evokes that of the Foyer de la danse, located behind the stage, which we sometimes have the chance to contemplate in certain productions.
